Juan Carandell Pericay: un catedrático de bachillerato en la ciencia del primer tercio del siglo XX

Abstract

El geólogo y geógrafo Juan Carandell fue fi gura signifi cativa de la ciencia española de principios del siglo XX. Formado en los círculos más selectos de la Universidad Central de Madrid y claramente inserto ideológicamente en la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, su obra, muy variada y diversa —más de 300 títulos—, le defi ne como un preclaro representante del naturalismo español. Esencialmente geólogo y geomorfólogo en sus primeras etapas, derivará después a la práctica de la Geografía física y humana, espacio disciplinar en que alcanzó indudable maestría.La necesidad de alcanzar una posición profesional y económicamente digna, le llevó a opositar como profesor de Bachillerato, obteniendo plaza de catedrático de Historia Natural y Fisiología e Higiene en el Instituto de Cabra (Córdoba), donde permaneció hasta su traslado a la capital provincial. A pesar de su muerte temprana (44 años), su fi gura resulta de gran interés, en tanto que en él confl uyen la investigación científi ca de primera línea con la práctica apasionada e innovadora de la docencia.

The geologist and geographer Juan Carandell was a noteworthy fi gure of Spanish science at the beginning of the 20th century. He studied in the most exclusive spheres of the Central University of Madrid, and he was ideologically attached to the Free Teaching Institution (Institución Libre de Enseñanza), being his work very varied —more than 300 titles—, and defi ning him as an eminent representative of the Spanish naturalism. He was mainly a geologist in his fi rst stages, moving later to the practice of physical and human Geography, a fi eld of knowledge which he mastered. He was a brilliant student and researcher, and the need of reaching a decent professional and economic status made him participate in public competitive examinations to become a secondary school teacher, and he got his chair in Natural History, Physiology and Hygiene at the secondary school of Cabra (Córdoba), where he stayed until he moved to the province capital. In spite of his early death (being 44 years old), his fi gure is of great interest, since he brings together fi rst quality scientifi c research with a passionate and innovative practice of teaching.
