A presente investigação tem por base o estudo da arquitectura doméstica e popular da comunidade de Arrifes, da ilha de São Miguel, no Arquipélago dos Açores. De características invulgares quer na ilha, quer na Região Autónoma dos Açores, esta habitação apresenta particularidades que lhe valeram o epíteto de casa “mata-vacas” e até a menção de “bairro cubista”, aquando da referência a estes aglomerados compostos por este tipo de edificação, na documentação do século XX. A empena virada para a rua, a fachada na lateral, a existência de falsa apenas sobre a cozinha, a eira2 ou o polim3 são alguns dos elementos que se destacam e que conferem singularidade a esta casa. A localidade necessita de uma intervenção preventiva urgente, que sensibilize a população e as entidades locais sobre o valor do seu património edificado. The presente investigation is based on housing architecture and popular community of Arrifes, in the Island of São Miguel, archipelago of Azores. From unusual characteristics either in the Island or the Region, this housing presents particularities that earned it epithet mata-vacas and even the mention of bairro cubista when reference was made to these ways composed of this type of edification in 20th century documentation. The gable facing the street, the facade on the side, the existence of a “loft” only above the kitchen, the eira or the polim are some of the elements that are highlighted and provide singularity to this house. The parish needs urgent preventive intervention to raise awareness among the population and local entities about the value of their built heritage.
