Un poema italiano de fines del siglo XVIII sobre la biografía de Muḥammad. Maometto, legislatore degli Arabi e fondatore dell’impero musulmano, de Alberto Baccanti

Abstract

Este artículo presenta y analiza el contenido de un poema italiano poco conocido sobre la biografía del profeta Muḥammad. La obra, que lleva por título Maometto legislatore degli arabi e fondatore dell’ impero musulmano; fue compuesta a finales del siglo XVIII por Alberto Baccanti, canónigo de Casalmaggiore. Además de ofrecer un amplio resumen del argumento, se especifican las principales fuentes, en particular, la biografía de Muḥammad publicada en 1748 por Jean Gagnier, y se comentan otras cuestiones relacionadas, como son el contexto literario en que aparece, el proceso de adaptación del material biográfico a los códigos formales del poema épico y el propio tratamiento ideológico de la biografía del Profeta.

This paper presents and analyzes the content of a little known Italian poem about the biography of the Prophet Muhammad. This work, entitled ‘Maometto legislatore degli Arabi e fondatore dell' impero musulmano’, was composed in the late eighteenth century by Alberto Baccanti, canon from Casalmaggiore. In addition to offering a comprehensive summary of the plot, we identify the main sources, in particular, the biography of Muḥammad published in 1748 by Jean Gagnier, and we discuss other issues, such as the literary context in which it appears, the adaptation of biographical material to formal codes of epic poetry and the ideological treatment of the Prophet Muhammad’s biography.
