Patrones y vistas: la heráldica municipal americana en el siglo XVI

Abstract

Se analizan 57 escudos municipales americanos otorgados por la corona durante el intervalo 1508-1600, que fueron compuestos siguiendo pautas previamente establecidas en los concedidos en el reino de Granada y las islas Canarias, pero utilizaron unos recursos plásticos caracterizados por un incremento temporal de las representaciones de tipo naturalista. Cuatro quintas partes muestran la vista de la ciudad o la del paraje donde ésta se había fundado, la imagen religiosa de su patrón, o una combinación de ambos temas. El quinto restante exhibe en su mayoría leones, generalmente alusivos al valor de los conquistadores. En la mitad del total se incorporaron a los motivos anteriores las armerías del reino castellano-leonés o las divisas e iniciales de los monarcas.

57 coats of arms granted by the Spanish crown to American cities during the interval 1508-1600 are analyzed. These were organized conforming to patterns previously established in those bestowed upon towns in the Granada kingdom and the Canary Islands, but their plastic design was characterized by a temporal increase of naturalistic representations. Four fifths represent the city view or the geographical surroundings of the site where it had been founded, the religious image of its patron, or a combination of both figures. Most of the remaining fifth shows lions, generally allusive to the courage of the conquistadores. Half the total incorporated the arms of the Castilla and Leon kingdoms, the initials of the monarchs or their devises.
