Tópicos sobre India en el cine occidental y las ONGs: el exoticismo y consumismo de la pobreza

Abstract

En la presente reflexión hago una reseña de la película británica Slumdog Millionaire, centrándome en el análisis de los tópicos de la India en el imaginario cinematográfico occidental. Basándome en la teoría de Edward Said, argumento que dicho film puede considerarse como un producto oriental, fabricado y consumido por occidente sobre el exotizado oriente. Asimismo, explico cómo la Fundación Vicente Ferrer marca una diferencia importante al desvincularse del paternalismo implícito en el discurso orientalista propio de muchas ONGs

In this paper I make a review of British film Slumdog Millionaire, focusing on an analysis of the stereotypes of India found in the western unconsciousness. Based on the theory of Edward Said, I argue that this movie can be considered an oriental product, as it is produced and consumed in the West and deals with the exoticized East. Furthermore, I explain how Vicente Ferrer Development Trust makes a difference, as it does not promote the paternalism implicit in the orientalist discourse of many NGOs.
