El tesoro de Córdoba. Comercio ilegal de antigüedades en el primer tercio del siglo XX

Abstract

En el Museo Británico puede admirarse una colección de joyas ibéricas y monedas hispanorromanas en plata conocida como Tesoro de Córdoba (Cordoba Treasure). Dicho conjunto, fruto de un hallazgo casual acaecido en 1915 junto al paraje del Molino del Marrubial, situado en las afueras de la ciudad de Córdoba, fue adquirido por el museo londinense en 1932 a un erudito y coleccionista norteamericano, W. L. Hildburg. Su salida de España y posterior venta se realizó contraviniendo toda la legislación vigente, precisamente en una época, el primer tercio del siglo XX, en que el Estado español realizaba un considerable esfuerzo, tanto legislativo como institucional, por dotar al país de mecanismos legales que protegieran de manera efectiva su patrimonio histórico-artístico.

The British Museum exhibits a collection of Iberian jewellery and Ibero-Roman silver coins known as Cordoba Treasure. The hoard, discovered by chance in 1915 at the Molino del Marrubial, on the outskirts of Cordoba,was acquired by the British Museum in 1932 to an american scholar and collector, W. L. Hildburg. Its exportation and subsequent sale was made breaching the legislation, at a time, the first decades of the twentieth century, in which the Spanish State carried out a considerable effort, both legislative and institutional, to provide the country with legal mechanisms which effectively could protect its historical and artistic heritage.
