Donne di casa: ritratti di liberte e patroni sui monumenti funerari romani

Abstract

La investigación sobre monumentos funerarios romanos viene concediendo gran importancia al análisis ornamental de las tumbas de los libertos, de su representación y la de sus respectivas familias, si bien tradicionalmente ha primado la componente masculina en perjuicio de la femenina. Este artículo analiza los retratos de “parejas” conformadas por patronus y liberta, buscando patrones que permitan reconocer enlaces matrimoniales a través del cuerpo iconográfico. Analizaremos esquemas, ropa, atributos, gestos y dedicación epigráfica a partir de ejemplos procedentes de Roma y de Italia centro-septentrional, convencidos de que la retratística funeraria puede llegar a aportar claves iconográficas de “parentesco”. Asimismo, se reflexiona sobre el rol familiar de las libertas y su (auto)representación fúnebre.

Freedmen’s monuments have an important role in the understanding of Roman funerary art: many scholars have stressed the importance of portraits of their families, by focussing their attention more on male than female members. This paper analyzes the representations of “couples” formed by patrons and freedwomen, trying to highlight if it was possible to visually understand whether they were married or not. The study moves through monuments with such family portraits proceeding from Rome and central-northern Italy, analyzing iconographical schemas, dress, gestures and commemoration patterns. In the last part, the paper discusses chances offered by iconography to understand freedwomen “kin” and relations and proposes some reflections on familiar role of female former-slaves.
