Comercio y comerciantes extranjeros en Manila, intereses económicos y problemas político-sociales. El caso de la comunidad armenia a comienzos del siglo XVIII

Abstract

Este trabajo se centra en el análisis de los problemas suscitados entre españoles y extranjeros en Filipinas, en las primeras décadas del siglo XVIII. A lo largo del mismo se muestra cómo el intenso comercio que se desarrollaba en Manila, donde confluían las rutas occidentales y orientales, atrajo a una gran variedad de gentes que se resistían a volver a sus patrias, una vez concluidos los tratos comerciales. Entre quienes mostraron una mayor inclinación a permanecer en Filipinas destacan los armenios, objeto de especial atención en este trabajo. La presente investigación se ha realizado sobre documentación del Archivo General de Indias (Sevilla) y constituye una aportación a un tema escasamente estudiado por los historiadores.

This essay is devoted to the analysis of the conflicts that arose between Spaniards and foreigners in the early 18th century in the Philippines. The essay shows that the burgeoning commercial activity in Manila, a point of convergence of eastbound and westbound trade routes, attracted people from many different areas in the world, who were reluctant to return to their countries after concluding the business deals that had taken them to the Philippines. Among those that showed a greater tendency to remain in the islands were the Armenians, which receive special attention in the essay. The research reported here has been carried out on the basis of documentation in the Archivo General de Indias (Seville). It constitutes a contribution to a topic that has scarcely been studied by historians.
