San Mercurio y los cinocéfalos: hagiografía y folclore

Abstract

La biografía de San Mercurio de Cesarea está plagada de elementos portentosos que se han ido incorporando al núcleo hagiográfico originario. De todos ellos, destaca la importancia que en Oriente tuvo la presencia de los κυνοκεφαλοί en determinados momentos de su vida. Estos monstra del folclore grecolatino y oriental se introducen en la leyenda del santo para cumplir dos claras acciones: primero como oponentes del héroe, después como ayudantes, gracias a la mediación divina y a la reinserción del “otro” en el sistema cristiano.

The biography of Saint Mercury of Caesarea is full of portentous elements that have been incorporated into the original hagiographic nucleus. Of all of them, highlights the importance that in the East has the presence of the κυνοκεφαλοί in certain moments of Saint’s life. These monsters of Greco-Latin and Eastern folklore are introduced into the legend of the Saint to fulfill two clear actions: first, they are opponents of the hero, then his helpers, according to the divine mediation and the reinsertion of the “Other” into the Christian system.
