Ciencia y superstición en los almanaques satíricos españoles del siglo xix

Abstract

El almanaque experimentó un enorme éxito en España durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Las distintas transformaciones que había sufrido el género desde el siglo XVIII provocaron la pérdida paulatina de contenidos astrológicos en favor de una mayor presencia de textos misceláneos y literarios. Esta evolución del almanaque refleja un cambio en la concepción científica de las sociedades científicas actuales, en las que la astrología y otras ciencias tradicionales habían quedado relegadas al ámbito de la superstición. Los almanaques satíricos del siglo XIX evidencian esta evolución del género y su naturaleza, y abordan en muchos de sus textos referencias a ese pasado «científico» del almanaque y otras ciencias a través de la ironía y la burla.

The almanac achieved an incredible success in Spain during the second half of the 19th century. The different transformations that the genre had suffered since the 18th century caused a gradual loss of its astrological contents in favour of a higher presence of miscellaneous and literary texts. This evolution of the almanac reflects changes in the scientific conception of current scientific societies, where astrology and other traditional sciences had been relegated to the sphere of superstition. The satirical almanacs of the 19th century evince the genre’s evolution and its nature, and tackle in several texts some references about that almanac’s «scientific» past and other sciences through jokes and irony.
