Dynamics of relativistic particles and strings

Abstract

Variational principles have become firmly established both as powerful tools to construct relevant physical models and as a source of interesting mathematical problems. In this PhD thesis, we study a certain collection of functionals over curves living in a relativistic spacetime. Such functionals are a natural generalization of the well-known free relativistic particle model and are constructed from the so-called Frenet curvatures of the particle worldline. More concretely, we obtain results which characterize the dynamics of functionals linear in the first and second curvatures in two wide families of spacetimes of physical and mathematical importance, namely the generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes and the standard static spacetimes.

Los principios variacionales se han consolidado como herramientas potentes para construir modelos físicos relevantes y como fuente de problemas matemáticos interesantes. En esta tesis de doctorado, estudiamos una cierta colección de funcionales definidos sobre curvas que viven en un espaciotiempo relativista. Dichos funcionales son una generalización natural del bien conocido modelo de la partícula relativista libre y se construyen a partir de las llamadas curvaturas de Frenet de la trayectoria de la partícula. Más concretamente, obtenemos resultados que caracterizan la dinámica de funcionales linales en la primera y segunda curvaturas en dos grandes familias de espaciotiempos de importancia física y matemática como son los espaciotiempos de Robertson-Walker generalizados y los espaciotiempos estáticos estándar.
