Alegoría del Monte Carmelo en una pintura de Luis Juárez

Abstract

Uno de los portentos marianos que caracterizó a la orden de los carmelitas fue la entrega del escapulario a san Simón Stock. Este privilegio distinguió a la orden de las demás otorgándole prestigio. A consecuencia de ello, este episodio fue reproducido en pinturas a lo largo y ancho del mundo católico, como parte de un discurso legitimador. En la capital novohispana se pintó a inicios del siglo XVII una alegoría al respecto. En este trabajo se abordan los elementos que se representaron en ella para lograr un acercamiento al imaginario carmelitano de su tiempo en donde el discurso que la sustenta fue ideado.

One of the Marian portents that characterized the Carmelite order was the conveyance of the scapular to Saint Simon Stock. This privilege distinguished the order from others by giving it special standing. Consequently, this act was reproduced in paintings throughout the Catholic world as part of a legitimizing discourse. In the capital of New Spain, an allegory about it was painted at the beginning of the 17th century. I contend that the elements of this painting achieve an approach to the Carmelite imaginary order of the time when the discourse that sustains it was devised.
