An estimation of the genetic and environmental correlations between
prolificacy (kits born alive and number of kits at weaning) and functional
longevity in a population selected for litter size at weaning since
1992 was carried out. The method is only an approximation, but suggests
that genetically longevity and litter size are not antagonistic objectives
in breeding programmes, because the estimated genetic
correlations are not significantly different from zero
