A morphometric study of intranuclear cytoplasmic intrusions was performed on HeLa cells of the S3 Line provided by Institute of Cytological Investigations of Valencia (Spain). The work was based on data obtained from electron micrographs by gravimetric and planimetric methods. The data were reviewed biostatistically and a study was carried out on simple and multiple linear correlations of the first order. Section areas of the cytoplasm, nucleus, cell and the surface of the invaginated cytoplasm (intrusions) were taken into consideration as well as ratios nucleus/ cytoplasm, nucleus/intrusions and cytoplasm/intrusions. Finally the nuclear perimeter and the nuclear contour index (NCI) were determined. The use of a bidimensional model has reinforced the results of the study. A positive influence of the sectional area of the nucleus over the sectional area of the invaginated cytoplasmic surface was observed. An increase in cytoplasm does not alter the nuclear perimeter nor induce the formation of intrusions. The invaginations exist in various sizes and shapes, the mayority being of intermediate size. They appear to be dynamic formations which originate, grow and regress, and form part of a teleonomic mechanism that increases the nuclear-cytoplasmic border. They are produced by anisoperirnetric deformation of the nuclear membrane with a resultant increase in nuclear volume. A biostatistical study does not settle whether the membrane experiences an elastic growth or growth by intussusception.en
