Verb collocations and their semantics in the specialized language of science

Abstract

This chapter is concerned with verb collocations in the specialized language of science. I pay attention to their semanticity, since my main objective is to discover the topics evoked in terms of their integrating elements. The methodology applied is as follows: first, I compile a specialized corpus of research articles; second, I automatically extract a list of collocation candidates, which is manually revised; third, the selected collocations are semantically classified. As this work is motivated by a previous study on noun collocations, I perform a comparative analysis. The findings are that noun and verb collocations share similar semantic frames, although the method employed in each study yields different, but complementary, results.

Este capítulo analiza las colocaciones verbales en el lenguaje especializado de la ciencia. Concretamente, se centra en su semanticidad, ya que su principal objetivo es descubrir los temas evocados en función de los elementos integradores de las colocaciones. La metodología aplicada es la siguiente: en primer lugar, se recopila un corpus especializado de artículos de investigación; en segundo lugar, se extrae automáticamente una lista de candidatos a colocaciones, que se revisa manualmente; en tercer lugar, las colocaciones seleccionadas se clasifican semánticamente. Como este trabajo está motivado por un estudio anterior sobre colocaciones de sustantivos, también se realiza un análisis comparativo. Los resultados parecen mostrar que las colocaciones de sustantivos y verbos comparten marcos semánticos similares, aunque el método empleado en cada estudio arroja resultados diferentes, si bien complementarios.
