Bilateral or Liaison Interpreting as the Main Teaching Asset for Phone Interpreting: A Proposal

Abstract

This paper reflects on the ways of teaching interpretation over the phone or phone interpreting (PI), which we believe may be mainly taught through the development of liaison interpreting techniques. We offer an analysis of the current market situation through a review of the research literature published so far on the subject. Also, we highlight the various areas of specialisation within PI which would need specific skills and competences. We conclude with our proposal on education on this modality of interpretation.

En el capítulo se reflexiona sobre las formas de enseñar interpretación por teléfono o interpretación telefónica (IT), principalmente, mediante el desarrollo de técnicas de interpretación de enlace. Se expone un análisis de la situación actual del mercado a través de una revisión de la literatura de investigación publicada hasta ese momento sobre el tema. Asimismo, destacamos las distintas áreas de especialización dentro de la IT que requieren cualificaciones y competencias específicas. Se concluye con nuestra propuesta de aprendizaje en esta modalidad de interpretación.
