This paper aims to analyze the importance of acquiring mathematical skills in the primary
education stage within the framework of the key competences highlighting their contribution to the
development of a mathematical culture of society, hence the importance of the issues addressed in
this paper. After giving a description of what the competence approach entails in education, we
will focus on the constructivist methodology applied to the area of mathematics to finalize with the
elaboration of pedagogical guidelines that facilitate the teaching and learning process of
mathematics in the stage of primary education.
