Los Planes, 1550-1700. Estudio histórico social de un linaje de mercaderes y ciudadanos de Valencia

Abstract

En este artículo se analiza, a partir de tres generaciones de la familia Planes, originaria de Mallorca, representadas por Gaspar, su sobrino Bartomeu, ambos mercaderes, y el hijo de Bartomeu, Vicent, ciudadano de Valencia, quien también siguió el camino del comercio, las estrategias de ascenso social que utilizó esta familia para consolidarse como parte de la élite y obtener el estatus de ciudadanos en la sociedad valenciana de época moderna. Este trabajo pretende contribuir al entendimiento de la movilidad social que caracterizó a las sociedades occidentales desde esa época y profundizar más en las estrategias de promoción social de los Planes para definir los comportamientos clave de estas élites a la hora de ascender posiciones gracias a la diversificación de las fuentes de riqueza, a su preeminencia social y a otros elementos culturales diferenciadores.

This article analyzes the strategies of social mobility that the Planes family, with origins in Mallorca, used to consolidate their role on the elite of the modern Valencian society, achieving the status of citizens. We study three generations of this family represented by Gaspar, his nephew Bartomeu (both merchants) and the son of Bartomeu, Vicent, a citizen of Valencia who continued with his father’s profession as a merchant. This work hopes to contribute to the understanding of the social mobility that characterized western societies from the modern age, and delve even more on the strategies of social mobility of the Planes in an effort to define the key behaviors of these elites when seeking to improve their social position - such as diversification of sources of wealth, social preeminence, and other cultural elements.
