Análisis de fuentes para una Historia desde los márgenes: Constantinopla en Benjamín de Tudela y Abū Ḥāmid Algharnāṭī

Abstract

Las descripciones de las ciudades durante la Edad Media oscilan entre la percepción de lo real y lo imaginario, especialmente aquellas que, como Constantinopla, tienen una dimensión que se adentra en lo simbólico. La interpretación de cada uno de sus rincones dependerá del origen del observador, pero no solo los cristianos se acercaban a ella. Desde los confines del Mediterráneo del siglo XII, también se acercaban a la capital de un Imperio oriental que, a pesar de los cambios provocados por la fundación de los reinos latinos en Tierra Santa y el peso cada vez mayor de las dinastías turcas en el mundo islámico, seguía siendo la gran metrópoli. Por este motivo, dos personajes muy diferentes se hacen eco de Constantinopla. Benjamín de Tudela y Abū Ḥāmid Algharnāṭī solo comparten sus orígenes peninsulares y una pasión por los viajes que los llevó desde Alandalús/Sefarad hasta Oriente. La ciudad que ambos describen, a pesar de hacerlo más o menos en la misma época, no podría ser más diferente, ya que buscaban en ella elementos distintos. Este pequeño estudio pretende poner en diálogo dos textos diferentes con el fin de armonizar la geografía percibida y la geografía humana de la capital bizantina.

Descriptions of cities during the Middle Ages oscillate between the perception of the real and the imaginary, especially those which, like Constantinople, have a dimension that delves into the symbolic. The interpretation of each of its corners will depend on the origin of the beholder, but it was not only Christians who approached it. From the fringes of the Mediterranean in the 12th century, they also approached the capital of an Eastern Empire which, despite the changes brought about by the foundation of the Latin Kingdoms in the Holy Land and the increasing weight of the Turkish dynasties in the Islamic world, remained the great metropolis. For this reason, two very different characters echo Constantinople. Benjamin of Tudela and Abū Ḥāmid Algharnāṭī only share the same peninsular origins and a travelling passion that took them from Alandalus/Sepharad to Eastern lands. The city that they both describe, even though they did so at the same time, could not be more different in that they were both looking for different elements in it. This small study aims to bring two different texts into dialogue with each other in order to harmonise the perceived geography and the human geography of the Byzantine capital.
