Juan de Mariana’s De rege et regis institutione libri tres are widely known due to their historical controversy as well as the trial the Jesuit stood in after publishing his Tractatus septem, whose content finds its origins in the already mentioned treatise about the education of the King. Many studies emphasise the great influence this work had in the development of European polítical thought. The purpose of our work is, nevertheless, approaching the books philologically in order to ascertain the editorial conditions of this treatise. After publishing his work in Toledo in 1599, Mariana publishes the books once again in 1605 in Mainz, including a series of modifications, a new chapter among them. However, it does not bear the title of second edition, whereas the edition of 1611 does, which does not contain any remarkable modification in comparison to the one published in Mainz. We will try to give as many insights as possible, since the matter is still unclear.
