Paul Auster y la magia de la escritura de otros mundos

Abstract

La magia es un elemento presente en la narrativa de Paul Auster. Los fenómenos mágicos, vinculados tanto a la irrupción del azar como al poder de la memoria –otros dos temas recurrentes en sus novelas– y ligados a ciertos objetos muy concretos, permiten poner en marcha el funcionamiento de narraciones dentro de otras narraciones, recurso característico de Auster. En este artículo se plantea que una posible fuente para la presencia de la magia en sus textos podría ser el interés que muestra tener por el pensamiento del filósofo Giordano Bruno, como se demuestra en las alusiones a este pensador que se encuentran en su literatura.

Magic is a recurring element in Paul Auster’s narrative. Magical phenomena–linked both to the irruption of chance and to the power of memory, two other recurrent themes in his novels, and associated with certain very specific objects–make it possible to set in motion the functioning of stories within other stories, a characteristic device in Auster’s work. This article argues that a possible source for the presence of magic in his texts may be his evident interest in the thought of the philosopher Giordano Bruno, as demonstrated by the references to this thinker that appear in his literature.
