<dim:field element="description" qualifier="abstract" language="es_ES" mdschema="dc">Continuous exercise has been shown to induce damage altering sperm quality,
and more precisely sperm morphology. This seems to be related to the high production
of free radicals as a result of exercise. In previous experiences, we tested the
administration of N-acetylcysteine and trans-resveratrol as a dietary supplement in an
experimental model of forced swimming in CD-1 mice; the results indicated that these
antioxidants reduce the damage caused by intense/ continuous exercise decreasing
percentage of abnormal sperm. The objective of this study was to compare the
protective effect of three different antioxidants (N-acetylcystine, trans-resveratrol and
ubiquinol).
Seventy-five mice were randomly allocated into 5 groups of 15: rest group
(REP), swimming (C-NAT), swimming + trans-resveratrol (RESV), swimming + Nacetylcysteine
(NAC) and swimming + ubiquinol (UBIQ). The animals in the C-NAT,
NAC, RESV and UBIQ groups were subjected to 3 minutes of forced swimming
exercise in a pool with controlled temperature (33-35°C) for 50 consecutive days.
Antioxidants were administered daily in a 1-gram cake mixed with feed.
After death of the animals by cervical dislocation sperm morphology assessment
was performed from an extension of epididymary (tail) sperm content stained with
eosin-nigrosin.
Significant differences were found (p <0.05) between the C-NAT and REP
group, which means that forced swimming exercise induces sperm damage. When
comparing the percentage of normal sperm, all antioxidant supplementd groups showed
significantly higher numbers (p <0.01) with regards to C-NAT group. This means that
the administration of all three antioxidants is effective in reducing sperm abnormalities
induced by continuous exercise; among them, ubiquinol, showed higher percentage of
normal sperm in comparison to REP group (p <0.05). When anomalies were categorized
into major (abnormalities of head and midpiece) and minor (tail abnormalities)...</dim:field>
