This large-scale study covering nearly 1,300 investigative and descriptive research papers
gleaned from over fifty journals published in European languages analyses the emerging
trends in interpreting research over the period 2001-2020, indicating likely directions
for the immediate future. Following a chronological overview of the growth in the
number of articles dedicated to interpreting, they are classified using a thematic
categorisation designed to identify the leading areas of interest and the emerging trends,
effectively corroborating training and PSI as the main topics of interests alongside a
burgeoning interest in technological innovation. The paper also identifies the leading
researchers and their focuses.
