This paper provides a review of the literature on bilingual education and math-
ematics. In the European context, the predominant form of bilingual education
is the content and language integrated learning (CLIL) approach. The review
carried out shows the close link between content and language learning, and
the complexity this entails from a research point of view. It was found that
most of the existing literature focuses on the impact of bilingual education on mathematical learning processes and outcomes. In spite of the added cogni-
tive costs, there are works that support the benefits that bilingual education
can generate on mathematical learning.
