The Guadalquivir river constitutes the main hydrographic basin of Andalusia, which supports the impact of numerous socioeconomic activities that place Guadalquivir river in a vulnerable situation that endanger its environmental quality and biodiversity. Given its high biological, economic and landscape value, it is of marked importance to manage this water resource properly. To contribute to perform such task, a global diagnosis of the river has been carried out by integrating physicochemical and microbiological analysis methodologies. The results obtained show that the highest value of the water quality index is at the source of Guadalquivir river and decreases with the course of the river. The decrease in water quality index might be due to the influence of variables whose concentration can fluctuate naturally (turbidity, anions and cations, etc.), and those related to anthropogenic activities (heavy metals, total coliforms, certain pesticides, etc.). High peaks of pollutants and other variables that indicate poor water quality have been detected, which are related to anthropogenic activities from tributaries of the main river, such as at Guadaira (high levels of iron and copper) and Genil rivers (proliferation of coliform bacteria, such as E.coli), and in the final stretch of the river (agricultural activities). Likewise, another way of assessing water quality is the biodiversity index and the microbiological profile, both results are consistent with those obtained in the physicochemical analyses and which have allowed obtaining correlations that will be very useful when deepening in the study of an ecosystem as complex and relevant as the Guadalquivir river.
