Valores de la forma cantara en el siglo XV: el caso de Juan de Mena

Abstract

Como es bien sabido el uso de la forma verbal —ra en español evoluciona desde el pluscuamperfecto de indicativo primitivo al moderno imperfecto de subjuntivo durante la Edad Media. En este trabajo mi intención es estudiar el uso de cantara en español literario del siglo XV. un período de especial interés; teniendo esto presente abordo parcialmente de la obra poética de Juan de Mena. Los resultados del análisis muestra los valores cambiantes de la forma verbal en el siglo XV, contemplando tanto el uso moderno como el antiguo. Tal uso no opera al azar; de hecho, parece haber una cierta relación entre el valor cantara y la estructura sintáctica en que aparece la forma verbal. Esta conclusión nos permite entender de una forma más exacta la evolución de cantara.

As is well known the use of the -ra verbal form in Spanish evolves from the primitiva pluperfect indicative to the modem imperfect subjunctive during the Middle Ages. In this paper, my purpose is to study the use of cantara in literary Spanish in the 15th century, an especial, interesting period; with this aim in mind I approach parts of the poetic work by Juan de Mena. The results of the analysis show a changing situation in the values of this verbal form in the 15th century, with both the old and the modern usage. This usage is not at random: in fact, there seems to be a certain relation between the value of cantara and the syntactic structure where the verbal form occurs. This conclusion allows us to understand, in a more precise way, the evolution of cantara.
