This paper deals with Juan Valera’s politic and literary life. It focuses on
Valera’s stays at Germany and it examines his versions and translations from
German poems. Goëthe, Schiller, Herder, Geibel, Heine, Fastenrath and Schack are
the selected poets. All in all, it studies Valera’s creative work showing his pioneering
labour because he brings part of the German literature closer to the Spanish reader, at
the end of the nineteenth century. Este artículo aborda la vida política y literaria de Juan Valera. Se centra en
sus estancias en Alemania y estudia sus versiones o traducciones de poemas
germanos. Goëthe, Schiller, Herder, Geibel, Heine, Fastenrath y Schack son los poetas
seleccionados. Con todo, analizamos su quehacer creativo mostrando su labor
pionera al acercar parte de la literatura alemana al lector español en el tramo final del
siglo XIX.
