La división de los intervalos según Gaudencio el Filósofo

Abstract

Cet article est consacré à Gaudence le Philosophe. La seule information certaine dont nous disposions au sujet de ce musicien grec de l’Antiquité tardive est qu’il a composé un traité d’harmonie. Considéré comme un auteur éclectique par les spécialistes, Gaudence propose dans le huitième chapitre de son Harmonica Introductio une classification nouvelle des intervalles musicaux. Cet article analyse cette innovation et la compare aux conceptions intervalliques élaborées par d’autres célèbres musicologistes de la Grèce ancienne. Tout en reprenant la tradition aristoxénienne, Gaudence introduit deux variations importantes : d’un côté, il rétablit la classification en notes homophones, consonantes, dissonantes et paraphones, abandonnée des siècles auparavant ; de l’autre, il crée des octaves en combinant des quartes et des quintes.

This article tries and introduces Gaudentius the Philosopher, a Greek musician from the late Antiquity, who is known to us only for the composition of an harmonic’s treaty. He has been considered as an eclectic author by the critics. In the eighth chapter of his Harmonica Introductio, Gaudentius gives an innovative classification of musical intervals. Throughout this article, his intervalic arrengement is examined, analyzed and compared with others elaborated by famous ancient Greek musicologists. Although Gaudentius follows the ancient aristoxenian tradition, he introduces two important variations : on the one hand, he restores the way of classifying homophone, consonant, disonant and paraphone notes, abandonned centuries before, and, on the other, he creates octaves by combining fourths and fifths.
