Estudio Comparativo de Motilidad Laríngea y Morfometría en Caballos PRE y CDE

Abstract

En este trabajo de Fin de Máster se ha realizado un estudio comparativo de la motilidad laríngea entre dos razas de caballos: Caballo de Deporte Español (CDE) y Pura Raza Española (PRE), y al mismo tiempo se han comparado parámetros físicos y morfométricos de cada raza, con el fin de evaluar la relación entre medidas morfométricas y motilidad laríngea. Las dos poblaciones seleccionadas estaban clínicamente libres de Neuropatía del Laríngeo Recurrente y, por ese motivo, se realizaron endoscopias sin y con sedación a todos los animales. La hipótesis de este estudio planteaba que la motilidad del aritenoides izquierdo sería menos eficiente en caballos CDE, que en caballos PRE y que esta diferencia estaría relacionada con las características morfométricas de cada raza. Los resultados obtenidos confirman la hipótesis y demuestran que la motilidad del aritenoides izquierdo es menos eficiente en los caballos CDE que en los PRE. En cuanto a las medidas morfométricas, se encontraron diferencias significativas entre razas que pueden estar relacionadas con la motilidad laríngea, como son la alzada a la cruz y la longitud del cuello dorsal, que eran mayores en el CDE. Al mismo tiempo, se observó relación entre el grado de motilidad del aritenoides izquierdo con sedación y sin sedación. Cabe destacar que las limitaciones de este trabajo derivan principalmente del bajo número de individuos estudiados, con una muestra de diez caballos por raza, y la heterogeneidad de algunas características físicas. La relación entre medidas morfométricas y grado de motilidad laríngea puede abrir puertas a mejorar la selección caballar para el deporte. También, el uso de sedación durante la endoscopia diagnóstica podría convertirse en una herramienta útil en caballos difíciles de endoscopiar, y para evitar falsos negativos y detectar patología subclínica.

This Masters Degree Thesis aimed to study laryngeal motility in two horse breeds: Spanish Sports Horse (CDE) and Spanish Purebred or Andalusian (PRE). At the same time, we compared some physical and morphometric parameters of each breed, to investigate the relationship between the morphometric measures and laryngeal motility. Both populations were clinically free of Laryngeal Recurrent Neuropathy (RLN) and because of this endoscopies were performed with and without sedation on all animals. In this study we hypothesized that the motility of the left arytenoid would be less efficient in the CDE than in the PRE horses, and that this difference may be related to the morphometric characteristics of each breed. The results obtained show that the motility of the left arytenoid is less efficient in CDE horses than in PRE horses. Regarding the morphometric measurements, significant differences were found that may be related to the differences in laryngeal motility, such as the height at the withers and the length of the dorsal neck that were greater in the CDE. At the same time, a relationship between the motility of the left arytenoid with sedation and without sedation was observed. It should be noted that the limitations of this work derive mainly from the low number of individuals studied, with a population of ten horses per breed, and the heterogeneity of some physical characteristics. The relationship between morphometric measurements and degree of laryngeal motility can open doors to improve horse selection for sport. Also, the use of sedation for diagnostic endoscopy of RLN could become a useful tool for horses that are difficult to endoscopy, to avoid false negatives and to detect subclinical pathology.
