San Agustín y Egidio Romano: de la distinción a la reducción del poder temporal a la autoridad espiritual

Abstract

Son múltiples las fuentes en las que el texto de Egidio, De ecclesiasticapotestate, hunde sus raíces. Nos centramos, sin embargo, en las constantes y decisivas citas de San Agustín. Creemos que mediante el uso de unos determinados textos, Egidio, desde un horizonte sociopolítico y cultural muy distinto, orienta la interpretación de San Agustín en una dirección alejada e incluso imprevista en otras páginas de su obra, al afirmar no la distinción sino la reducción y subordinación radical del poder temporal a la autoridad espiritual.

The sources in which Egidio's texts of De Ecclesiastica Potestate anchors its roots are multiple. But on this occasion we would like to centre on the constant and crucial quotations from Saint Augustine appearing on Egidio's works. We believe that on the basis of some particular texts but taking a very different point of view in socio-political and cultural questions, Egidio directs the interpretation of Saint Augustine's work towards horizons quite apart from the Saint's views on the subject and even nonappearing on other writings of Saint Augustine. In fact, Egidio affirms not distinction but the reduction and radical subordination of the temporal power to the spiritual authority.
