The poetry of the Spanish Civil War responds to mechanisms of creation and dis-semination that are related to its propagandistic purpose on the battlefront and in the rearguard. Among the poets of the “national” side, there are many books in which fascist-inspired concepts such as the Fatherland, the Race, the Empire or the Crusade are repeated, which are typical of a rhetorical discourse that uses slogans to encourage adherence to the cause. However, alongside these manifestations determined by the urgency of the war conflict, certain books can be found that are on the margins of the genre because they explore the pain of the victims and offer a more human-ised vision, with a more elaborate poetic language. Altura. Poemas de guerra (1938), by the Galician writer José María Castroviejo, is one such book.
