Manuel Giménez Fernández y Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez: Historia de un desencuentro

Abstract

Manuel Giménez Fernández y Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez fueron dos de las figuras más destacadas de la democracia cristiana española, y dos de las voces críticas contra el franquismo más influyentes. El objetivo del presente artículo es poner de relieve los aspectos comunes de sus respectivas biografías personales y carreras políticas, pero también las profundas diferencias que les separaron. En las próximas páginas me propongo exponer y comparar las trayectorias seguidas por uno y otro para intentar aclarar porqué a pesar de que las mismas convergieron en un mismo punto, la oposición al franquismo, los dos políticos no fueron capaces de superar sus discrepancias y presentar un frente unido contra el mismo.

Manuel Giménez Fernández and Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez were two of the most outstanding leaders of the Spanish Christian Democracy, and two of the most influential critics of the Francoist Regime. The goal of this paper is to emphasize what their personal biographies and political careers had in common, but also the deep differences that moved them away. In the next pages, I pretend to expose and compare the path each one took and try to find out why, despite the fact both arrived to the same point, the opposition to Francoism, the two politicians were unable of getting over their disagreements so they could stand together against it.
