San Antón y El Pelotero de Arquillos: Dos claves de la religiosidad popular en una colonia de Sierra Morena

Abstract

El culto a San Antonio Abad está presente en la nueva población de Arquillos desde su fundación en 1768. Desde una devoción privada fue evolucionando a un culto público, teniendo su punto culminante durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. La procesión, la música, el voto o el Pelotero son algunos de los momentos álgidos de esta celebración. A través de este artículo trataremos de desarrollar la relación entre la fiesta de San Antón y la figura del Pelotero, y más concretamente con la familia que lleva décadas custodiándolo, los Momblán. Además, intentaremos profundizar en su posible origen como una de las manifestaciones culturales inmateriales más singulares que trajeron los colonos a las Nuevas Poblaciones de Sierra Morena y Andalucía.

The cult of San Antonio Abad is present in the new settlement of Arquillos since its foundation in 1768. From a private devotion it evolved into a public cult, having its climax during the second half of the 19th century. The procession, the music, the vote or the Pelotero are some of the highlights of this celebration. Through this article we will try to develop the relationship between the festival of San Antón and the figure of the Pelotero, and more specifically with the family that has been guarding it for decades, the Momblán. We will try to deepen in its possible origin as one of the most singular immaterial cultural manifestations that the colonists brought to the Nuevas Poblaciones de Sierra Morena y Andalucía.
