This paper analyses one of the most recurrent ways of sacred architecture
promotion by rural elites in early modern Andalusia: the funerary chapels in conventual
and parochial temples. Taking as a stage the city of Lucena, capital of the state of
Comares, the projection of such foundations is adressed from their multiple edges: the
spiritual, the artistic and symbolic, and the socioeconomic, which receives a broader
treatment by connecting the access to them and their proliferation with the processes of
venality and merchandising of graves.
