Patriotismo y legitimación monárquica en el pensamiento de Alonso de Cartagena: los escritos de Basilea

Abstract

El pensamiento de Alonso de Cartagena (1385-1456), es representativo de esa elite de letrados que van a poner su formación universitaria al servicio de un poder político centralizado al que irán dotando con buena parte de las características que a lo largo de la Edad Media habían identificado a la Iglesia. Esta concepción va a desarrollarse en toda Europa, pero en Castilla adoptará rasgos peculiares. En efecto, los letrados castellanos se empeñarán en mostrar que su reino es independiente del Imperio en virtud de sus orígenes godos, y le otorgarán un carácter unitario, pretendiendo representar no sólo a Castilla sino a España entera. Lo escrito durante su estancia en el Concilio de Basilea por el obispo de Burgos representa a la perfección esta tendencia.

Alonso de Cartagena’s (1385-1456) thought is representative of a group of elite lawyers who puttheir university education at the service of centralized political power, which is going to be provided with great part of the features that had been identified with the Church along the Middle Media. This concept would be developed in most part of Europe, but in Castilla is going to adopt peculiar features. Indeed, the Castilian scholars will endeavor to show that their kingdom is independent of the Empire by virtue of its Goth origins, and will assign a unitary character, with the intention of representing not only Castilla but the whole of Spain. What the Bishop of Burgos wrote during his stay in the Council of Basle perfectly represents this trend.
