El (invisible) papel de los traductores e intérpretes durante la COVID-19: estudio de las publicaciones de El País

Abstract

El(re)conocimiento social y mediático de los traductores e intérpretes ha sido un objeto de estudio de interés en los últimos años dentro del propio colectivo. Varios han sido los trabajos dedicados a la investigación de la presencia mediática en España de los traductores e intérpretes y todos ellos han concluido que su tratamiento por parte de los medios de comunicación es muy limitado. Tal y como subrayan, los periódicos españoles no conceden grandes espacios a las actividades traslativa e interpretativa. Sin embargo, ambas actividades s e han puesto especialmente a prueba en los últimos meses. Durante la pandemia mundial ocasionada por la COVID-19, los traductores e intérpretes han desempeñado (y aún desempeñan) la importante función de salvaguardar el derecho a la comunicación/información en igualdad de condiciones de todas las sociedades actuales, multiculturales y multilingües. Así pues, el presente estudio persigue evaluar el protagonismo que se le ha otorgado ante este escenario a los traductores e intérpretes en el periódico más popular de España. A este fin, se analizarán las publicaciones de E l País sobre los traductores e intérpretes desde el 14 de marzo de 2020 al 14 d e marzo de 2021.El corpus textual, extraído de la hemeroteca digital del periódico, manifestará una mayor cobertura mediática de la figura del traductor que de la del intérprete y, en concreto, una representación del traductor literario superior a la del traductor o intérprete médico. En definitiva, este trabajo evidenciará los escasos contenidos publicados por El País durante un año sobre los traductores e intérpretes y el invisible papel que han desempeñado durante la crisis sanitaria para este medio.

The social and media knowledge/acknowledgement of translators and interpreters has been a subject of study of interest in recent years within the professional group. Several studies have investigated the media presence of translator and interpreters in Spain, and all of them have concluded that their treatment by the media is very limited. As they underline, Spanish newspapers do not give much space to translating and interpreting activities. However, both activities have been particularly put to the test in recent months. During the global pandemic caused by COVID-19, translators and interpreters have played (and still play) the important role of safeguarding the right to communication/information on equal terms for all today’s multicultural and multilingual societies. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the role that translators and interpreters have been given i n this scenario in the most popular newspaper in Spain. To this end, the publications of El Paíson translators and interpreters from March 14, 2020 to March 14, 2021 will be analysed. The corpus, extracted from the newspaper's digital archive, will allow discovering a greater media coverage of the figure of the translator than that of the interpreter and, specifically, a higher representation of the literary translator than that of the medical translator or interpreter. In short, this work will show the scarce content published by El Paísf or a year on translators and interpreters and the invisible role they have played during the health crisis for this media.
