Manuel Antonio Talavera, un filósofo de la naturaleza en Chile colonial. extracto de las lecciones de Corporibus coelestibus dictadas a los estudiantes del real convictorio carolino (1792)

Abstract

El artículo pone a disposición, por primera vez, un texto crucial que da testimonio de la actividad docente de Manuel Antonio Talavera en Santiago de Chile. En el inicio del escrito se presentan aspectos biográficos novedosos de la vida del autor paraguayo, sobre su actividad como teólogo y abogado de la Real Audiencia, y respecto de su enseñanza de la filosofía a finales del siglo XVIII. En la segunda sección del trabajo se presenta la transcripción de una parte del curso de filosofía natural (De corporibus coelestibus) que Talavera impartió a sus alumnos en el Real Convictorio Carolino de Santiago de Chile. Si bien Talavera es mayormente reconocido como el primer cronista de la Independencia de Chile, el presente artículo arroja luz sobre su actividad como profesor de filosofía natural, con lo que también podemos apreciar y descubrir su condición de filósofo en Chile durante el fin del período colonial.

The article makes available for the first time a crucial text witnessing Manuel Antonio Talavera’s teaching activity in Santiago de Chile. The first part of the article presents new biographical findings about the life of the Paraguayan author, expanding on his activity as a theologian and lawyer of the Real Audiencia and his teaching of philosophy at the end of the 18th century. The second part of the paper offers the transcription of a part of a course on natural philosophy (De corporibus coelestibus) that Talavera gave to his students at the Real Convictorio Carolino of Santiago de Chile. While Talavera is mostly renowned as the first chronicler of the Independence of Chile, the present article sheds light on his activity as professor of natural philosophy. In the present work we can appreciate and discover his status as a philosopher in Chile during the end of the colonial period.
