El topos de Pericles y la caída del esclavo y el sueño como elemento definitorio

Abstract

Este artículo pretende analizar, de manera general, la evolución de los elementos primarios y secundarios del topos de Pericles y la caída del esclavo entre los siglos III a. C. y III d. C. y cómo los elementos secundarios son la clave para ver por qué los autores recurren a él. De manera particular, se considera el elemento secundario del sueño curativo en Plutarco como reflejo del conocimiento que tenía de los sueños incubatorios. También se mostrará cómo este sueño influirá en el topos, convirtiendo este elemento, un principio secundario, en primario.

The aim of this article is to analyse the evolution of the primary and secondary elements in the topos of ‘Pericles and the fall of the slave’ from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD, and how the secondary elements are key for under standing why the authors use the topos. The article also takes into account the secondary element of the healing dream in Plutarch’s Life of Pericles as a reflection of the knowledge he had about incubation dreams. Finally, it shows how this heal ing dream influences the topos as it changes this secondary element into a primary one.
