The aim of this work is to delve into the ideological and literary discourse in Italy during the reign of king Umberto I, a transition period defined as Italian Decadence on one side and, on the other side, characterised by the euphoria for the coming of a new world, of a new form of art. To this purpose, magazines published in Rome in the 1880s and the 1890s will be examined; such an analysis, far from being exhaustive, can be representative of cultural projects that gave a specific shape to a specific cultural and literary area of the new-born Italy, suspended between tradition and modernity. Some of the most important literary journals of fin-de-siècle Rome will be examined - Fanfulla della domenica, Cronaca bizantina, Il Convito –, as well as the dialogue that the cleverest and most remarkable voices of the Italian cultural scene hold in this journals and in other national magazines.
