De élite militar a élite político-económica: actividades económicas y redes clientelares del cuerpo de los Jenízaros en el Imperio Otomano del siglo XVIII

Abstract

Durante el siglo XVIII, los jenízaros empezaron a labrarse un papel de primer plano en la sociedad otomana. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las actividades de los jenízaros en el siglo XVIII, comparada con el análisis de fuentes archivísticas e historiográficas, fuera del contexto bélico. En primer lugar serán analizados las actividades económicas de los jenízaros, en segundo lugar, las relaciones con los gremios de artesanos, que los milicianos construyeron en el siglo XVIII. El análisis de los documentos del Archivo del primer ministro Otomano/Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi (BOA) revelará primero cómo los jenízaros se habían convertido en un polo económico; y, en segundo lugar, cómo las funciones desempeñadas por los jenízaros, fuera de los campos de batalla, les han permitido siempre jugar un papel fundamental dentro de la vida urbana del Imperio Otomano.

During the 18th century, the janissaries began to carve out a leading role in Ottoman society. The objective of this article is to analyze the activities of the Janissaries in the 18th century, compared with the analysis of archival and historiographic sources, outside the war context. Firstly, the economic activities of the Janissaries will be analyzed, secondly, the relations with the artisan guilds, which the militiamen built in the 18th century. Analysis of the documents from the Ottoman Prime Minister's Archive/Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi (BOA) will first reveal how the Janissaries had become an economic pole; and, secondly, how the functions performed by the Janissaries, outside the battlefields, have always allowed them to play a fundamental role within the urban life of the Ottoman Empire.
