vitamina C; tratamiento 4: 0,02 mg/kg aflatoxina 1g/lt de vitamina C;
Introduction and objectives.-
Mycotoxins are toxic chemicals produced as secondary metabolites by toxigenic
fungi, among which are aflatoxins. The effects of this toxin on reproductive
organs of rosters are a major problem for the poultry industry, since it has direct
impact on the proliferation and perpetuation of species. In order to contribute to
the solution of this problem an experimental trial that aimed to evaluate the
effect of aflatoxins on reproductive physiological and morphological aspects in
roosters (Gallus gallus) and the detoxifying effect of vitamin C was carried out.
Material and Methods.-
This study was divided into two stages. The 1st stage consisted of raising 100
chicks from the same breeder flock up to the 27 weeks of age; the 2nd stage
was concerned with dividing into 6 groups of 12 birds each a total of 72
roosters. This stage was subdivided into phase A and phase B; during phase A
six treatments were applied in the administration of two different doses of
aflatoxins (orally administered with food) and a fixed dose of vitamin C (orally
administered with drinking water) for ten days, as follows:
Treatment 1: 0 mg/kg aflatoxin 0 g/lt vitamin C; treatment 2: 0 mg/kg aflatoxin 1
g/lt vitamin C; treatment 3: 0.02 mg/kg aflatoxin 0 g/lt vitamin C; treatment 4:
0.02 mg/kg aflatoxin 1 g/lt vitamin C; treatment 5: 5.0 mg/kg aflatoxin, 0 g/lt
vitamin C and treatment 6: 5.0 mg/kg aflatoxin 1 g/lt vitamin C.
After treatment application, 50% in each group (6 birds per group) were
euthanized for postmortem sperm samples in order to analyze semen quality.
The testes were removed, weighed and measured. Samples were taken from
each testis and fixed in formaldehyde and Bouin’s to be processed for
histopathology. After phase A, the animals were fed with uncontaminated food
and drinking water without vitamin C. After thirteen days, the remaining of both
groups were euthanized (phase B) and repeated sampling and analysis was
carried out in order to evaluate the effect of treatment once a period of
spermatogenesis had been covered...
