Lectores y lecturas de la obra literaria de san Juan de la Cruz en el siglo XIX

Abstract

De forma diferente a lo que ocurrió en los siglos XVII y XVIII, durante el siglo XIX los escritos de san Juan de la Cruz comenzaron a despertar gran interés no sólo como obra espiritual o religiosa sino también como obra literaria. Se puede afirmar que, a lo largo de este siglo, pasaron a formar parte del canon de la literatura española. Lo que pretendemos en estas páginas es repasar, grosso modo, el camino seguido por el místico carmelita a través de la historia literaria española de esta centuria.

Contrary to what had happened during the 17 and 19th centuries, the works by St John of the Cross began to raise great interest during the 191h century, and not only for its spiritual and religious character, but also as literary works. We may assume that throughout that century they became part of the cannon in Spanish literature. My aim in this article is to give an account grosso modo of the pathway followed by the Carmelite mystic through the Spanish literary history of that century.
