Caricatura del indiano y (de)construcción autoparódica en De Herodes a Pilatos (1905) de Eva Canel

Abstract

El presente trabajo pretende ofrecer algunas claves de lectura en torno a De Herodes a Pilatos (1905), una de las obras teatrales pertenecientes a la última etapa literaria de la asturiana Eva Canel. La breve pieza, en forma de monólogo, pasó en su momento totalmente desapercibida por parte de la crítica, pese a su gran distanciamiento del tono y fórmulas literarias usualmente practicadas por la periodista. Desde un tono satírico y humorístico y a través de los estereotipos del burgués y el indiano explorados previamente por Canel, pretendemos ahondar en una línea de lectura inédita en su escritura: la autoparodia como indiana y española extranjera residente en la América Latina. A través del arquetipo del gallego, viajero inexperto e ingenuo por antonomasia en su etapa previa a convertirse en indiano, Canel narra, en boca del protagonista Pepe López, un hilarante relato lleno de malentendidos con el que poder reírse de sí misma al tiempo que aborda la visión occidentalista del español acomodado y la crítica a la virtud burguesa.

This paper aims to offer some reading keys De Herodes a Pilatos (1905), a stage play belonging to the latest stage.of the Asturian Eva Canel’s literary career. This short play, written as a monologue, barely drew any attention from the critics, in spite of the great detachment from the literary tone and formulas usually employed by the journalist. From a satirical and humorous point of view and considering the bourgeois and indiano stereotypes previously explored by the author, our aim is to highlight an unprecedented interpretation on displaying self-parody as an indiana and a foreigner citizen in Latin America. Through the gallego archetype, as an inexperienced and naive traveller prior to become an indiano himself, Canel narrates through Pepe López, the main character, a hilarious story full of misunderstandings with which she can laugh at herself while addressing the Westernist vision of the well-off Spaniard and criticising the bourgeois virtue.
