Hipótesis interpretativa de un sillar con relieves de Cartagena

Abstract

In the Municipal Archeologiacal Museum of Cartagena (Spain) (formerly Carthago Nova) there is á massive block of stone, discovered in the city in a place, ata a time and in circumstances which are unknown. On the front side there is a series of reliefs (human head, boat hollk, club, axe and cooking pot), which may be interpreted as pertaining to a scene connected with the catching of tuna and mackerel and their subsequent transformation into garum and other salted products. The block, whose decoration would have been completed in other similar ones, was probably part of a commemorative edifice or funaral monument in the old Roman colony.

En el Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Cartagena (antigua Carthago Nova) se conserva un sillar de piedra, de grandes proporciones, hallado en la ciudad en lugar, fecha y circunstancias desconocidas. En su cara frontal presenta una serie de relieves (cabeza humana, "bichero", maza, hacha y marmita), que pueden interpretarse como pertenecientes a una escena relativa a las actividades de la pesca de atúnidos y escómbridos y su posterior transformación en productos tales como el garum y otras salazones de pescado. El sillar, cuya decoración quedaría completada en otros similares, quizá formó parte de un edificio conmemorativo o de monumento funerario de la antigua colonia romana.
