Los Mármol, un linaje de orígen converso al servicio de la monarquía española (siglos XV-XVIII)

Abstract

Se presenta un análisis, en un tiempo largo, de la trayectoria de la amplia estirpe de los Mármol, compuesta por varios linajes y numerosas familias, que se desarrolló y progresó al calor del poder real castellano durante los siglos XV al XVIII. Partiendo de la figura del fundador de la estirpe, el maestro Alonso de Toledo, médico de la corte castellana, nos acercaremos al devenir de sus descendientes, entre los que figuraron funcionarios, miembros del clero, militares, intelectuales y oligarcas de varias ciudades castellanas. Se analizan las distintas estrategias desplegadas para su ennoblecimiento y ascenso social. También se desvela el verdadero origen de los Mármol y se confirma definitivamente su ascendencia judeoconversa.

This article will present an analysis of the widely Mármol lineage during the Modern Age, with their different families and members, which developed and had a remarkable social mobility under the protection Crown of Castile between the XVth and XVIIIth centuries. Beginning with the founder of the lineage, Alonso de Toledo, the Spanish court physician, we are going to approach to the path of his descendants: some of them members of the clergy, militars, officials, intellectuals and oligarchs in several towns. We will focus on the variety of their strategies in order to obtain the nobelty position and social ascension. Also the article shows the real origin of the Mármol and definitively confirms their New Christian blood.
