The olive tree, Olea europaea L., is one of the most ancient cultivated trees and
includes around 1200 described cultivars in the major producer countries, besides
other genotypes obtained by crossings in Breeding Programs. Among the producer
areas highlights the Mediterranean Basin, being Spain the producer country that is
placed in the first position and Andalucía the most important olive growing region in
the country. Thus, olive crop currently owns a high economic, social and ecologic
globally importance, mainly in the Mediterranean area. Actually, the beneficial olive oil
is the basis of the healthy Mediterranean diet.
Despite the importance of olive tree, this crop is being threatened by several
factors with biotic (insect pests and diseases, already know or new) or abiotic origin
(erosion, climate change), which have a high importance in those new geographic
areas where is gradually being cultivated. Currently, the Verticillium wilt of olive
(VWO), caused by Verticillium dahliae fungi, is considered the most important disease
that practically affects almost all zones where olive is grown and even causes a high
rate of dead plants. This disease is difficult to control, being necessary the employment
of an integrated control strategy with the application of all the control measurements
available. Between them, the use of resistant genotypes is the most economical, sure
and effective measurement. Thus, the search for resistant cultivars from the genetic
resources available in the Germplasm Banks is the main goal for the integrated control
against this devastating disease.
The evaluation of cultivars of the World Olive Germplasm Bank (WOGB) of
IFAPA of Córdoba has been developed throughout the PhD Thesis, by assessing of
almost 150 genotypes of this Bank to the V. dahliae defoliant pathotype. Most of the
evaluated cultivars were Spanish (62.4%), and among them, more than 60.0% of the
chosen genotypes for the screening were local. The inoculations with the pathogen
have corroborated the high susceptibility of most of assessed cultivars. The 68.5% of
them were susceptible in our experimental assay conditions, as well as it was
corroborated the resistance of ‘Frantoio’ and the susceptibility of ‘Picual’, which were
used as reference cultivars. Additionally, susceptible cultivars were categorized in
extremely susceptible (20.1%), susceptible (19.5%) and moderately susceptible ones
(28.9%), which differed basically in the disease severity that they exhibited.
Nevertheless, the 31.5% of cultivars were resistant and exhibited a similar
symptomatology than the genotypes that, up to date were considered as resistant.
Between them highlight the cultivars ‘Escarabajillo’, ‘Menya’, ‘Racimal’, ‘Sevillana de
Abla’ or ‘Verdial de Badajoz’. This group of genotypes was characterized by the low
disease incidence, slight symptoms and the absence of plant death. Thus, these studies
were used as initial screening of resistant genotypes for then, conducting new
experiments with those cultivars that exhibited some level of resistance, under natural
(infested fields) or controlled conditions. Once confirmed their resistance level, those
selected cultivars will be included as genitors in the olive Breeding Program that is
currently being carried out in the University of Cordoba. In subsequent works to this
Thesis, new genotype assessments of this WOGB will be considered, because up to
now it has been evaluated the half of the cultivars of this Bank. Essentially, the studies...
