La presencia femenina en los Castillos a la luz de la documentación catalana medieval

Abstract

En la sociedad feudal, dirigida por hombres, parece que el papel de las mujeres sea muy reducido. Ciertamente no era así. Ellas eran la clave del mantenimiento de la sociedad feudal y caballeresca; velaban por el bienestar espiritual y material del castillo y de sus habitantes. La señora o la, esposa del señor, tenía la responsabilidad del linaje y a menudo administraba, gobernaba y custodiaba el castillo, tanto en tiempos de paz como de guerra. En este artículo nos acercamos, con ejemplos documentales, a las castellanas y a las señoras eminentes, en una sociedad feudalizada. Estudiamos el papel de las señoras de los castillos como amas de casa, madres y esposas de guerreros, su relación con las armas y con la rueca.

In feudal society, run by men, it could seem that the role of women is very low. But it certainly was not like this. They were the key to the maintenance of feudal and chivalric society, they watched over the spiritual and material welfare of the castle and its inhabitants. The lady, or the wife of the lord, had the responsibility of the lineage and she often administered, governed and guarded the castle, not only in peacetime, but also in wartime. The aim of this article is to describe, through ex- amples from the documentation, the daily lives of these women as landholders. We studied the role of these ladies as housewives, mothers and wives of warriors, their relationship with the weapons and the spinning wheel.
