In our attempt to analyze the temporal and narrative techniques found in J.M.G. Le Clézio’s La Quarantaine , we have seen how the writer created two opposite uni- verses. On the one hand, Le Clézio deals with monumental time, represented by au- thoritative figures, and on the other hand, he introduces a time which can be consid- ered mythic as well as mystic: the time ex- perienced by Leon, the main character. Leon becomes “the other” and identifies himself with Rimbaud, the poet. Just like him, he develops into a cursed character.
