La imagen de Japón en España. Prensa, propaganda y cultura (1890-1945)

Abstract

Desde el final del shogunato Tokugawa la imagen exterior de Japón ha basculado entre la admiración y el rechazo, entre la modernización y la tradición, entre su pasado y su futuro, etc. Una imagen dual que ha atravesado diversos altibajos, pero que se ha mantenido hasta la actualidad. Desde finales del siglo XIX el país del Sol Naciente ha llegado a tener una influencia significativa en España, la cual ha acabado llegando hasta nuestros días. Sin embargo, tradicionalmente su imagen también ha estado lastrada por estereotipos e ideas preconcebidas que, en algunos casos, se han mantenido con el transcurrir de los años. El período comprendido entre 1890 y 1945 coincidió con un gran número de conflictos bélicos (incluyendo dos guerras mundiales) y con varias crisis políticas, pero en el mismo tiempo también se produjeron importantes cambios sociales y culturales. Fue, en conjunto, una etapa enormemente compleja tanto en España como en Japón.

Since the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the image of Japan abroad has swung between admiration and rejection, between modernization and tradition, between its past and its future. A dual image which has gone through several ups and downs, but that has remained until the present time. Since the end of the 19th century, the country of the Rising Sun has reached a significant influence in Spain, still noticeable up to these days. However, its image has been traditionally weighed down by stereotypes and preconceived ideas which, in some cases, have been maintained over the years. The period between 1890 and 1945 comprises a large number of armed conflicts (including two world wars) and several political crises, but at the same time there were also important social developments and cultural changes. It was, on the whole, an enormously complex stage both in Spain and in Japan.
