La visión de la ciencia en Experiment with an Air Pump de Shelagh Stephenson

Abstract

El cuadro An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump (1768) de Joseph Wright of Derby tuvo como gran novedad presentar a la ciencia en el centro de atención artística que hasta entonces había ocupado la religión de manera mayoritaria. Dos siglos más tarde, e inspirándose en esta obra, la dramaturga inglesa Shelagh Stephenson utilizó el recurso de la écfrasis para hacer una reflexión sobre la ciencia desde el teatro. Esta obra teatral presenta dos tramas distintas, una situada a finales del siglo XVIII y otra a finales del siglo XX, que narra de manera alterna en las distintas escenas. En la obra, la ciencia es abordada desde distintos puntos de vista: en relación con la religión, los límites éticos y morales de la ciencia, las mujeres en la ciencia a través de la historia, el extrañamiento y el desconocimiento ante la ciencia. A partir de aquí, se comprobará la vigencia de dichos planteamientos ante los nuevos desafíos a los que la humanidad tiene que hacer frente.

The great novelty of the painting An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump (1768) by Joseph Wright of Derby was to present science in the artistic center of attention that religion had occupied in a majority way until then. Two centuries later, and inspired by this work, the English playwright Shelagh Stephenson used the resource of ekphrasis to make a reflection on science from drama. This play presents two different plots, one located at the end of the 18th century and the other at the end of the 20th century, which are alternately narrated in the different scenes. In this work, science is approached from different points of view: in relation to religion, the ethical and moral limits of science, women in science through history, the estrangement and ignorance of science. From here on, the validity of these approaches will be verified facing the new challenges that humanity has to face.
